Women are born to dance.

UK scientists backed up this statement a few months ago, highlighting that the key to female prowess on the dance floor is all about the ways we move our hips, thighs and arms, linking this to courtship rituals and the natural drive to attract a partner.

You only have to look at the popularity of belly dancing and spiritual styles like Five Rhythms and Trance Dance to see that women don’t need many excuses to get up and shake their stuff.

But while it’s easy to fall back on the idea of biological programming and the urge to reproduce being our primary raison d’etre, I think there’s something much more primordial and magical about women wanting to dance just for themselves, to inhabit their bodies, find connection and explore their relationship with the world.

When I reflect on the many years I spent not wanting to dance, I understand exactly what this has been about. And strangely enough most of the reasons are cannily similar to the obstacles that women have told me get in the way of their enjoyment of sex.

I wonder if any of these reasons resonate with you?

  • Poor body confidence
  • Feeling inhibited and unable to let go
  • Avoidance of vulnerability
  • Not wanting to be seen
  • Uncertainty about what to do and how to do it
  • Afraid of being different or unique
  • Anticipating mistakes and dreading the consequences
  • Lacking energy or stamina
  • Not being as good as someone else
  • Mistrust of companions or partners
  • Fear of having to take the lead

Right now, I can’t wait for the next opportunity I’ve got to dance. When I work with women in my Sexually Prosperous Woman program, they feel the same about sex.

I can’t wait to tune into the beat of the music, feel the blood pumping round my body as my pulse rises, swing my hips and have a bloody good time just for me, to feed my soul. Take my advice and jump at every chance you’ve got to shake your stuff – it’s great practice for tackling some of the blocks that sit right in the way of your sexual prosperity.

You’re a woman and you were made for dancing. You were made to be sexually prosperous too! It’s your time to be wild and free!
